Elitist Folklore by Marianne Nielsen & Anne Tophøj
Monday, 22 October 2012
Ceramicists Marianne Nielsen & Anne Tophøj will exhibit their latest pieces this month as part of Copenhagen Ceramics' series of ten exhibitions focused on experimental ideas and applications in the craft. The Elitist Folklore collection focuses on the way in which we perceive the everyday shapes and objects of life, such as the dish, plate, table and flower.
Anne Tophøj's Fictil 12.3, dish1 (2012) uses evaluations of life and death, and universal symbols such as the skull, to re-interpret everyday ceramics such as dishes and plates.
Marianne Nielsen, meanwhile, uses the cultural references of flowers to create a deeper meaning. She says, "The works are about what is not directly present – the references linked to flowers, both as representatives of beauty and natural souvenirs."
Elitist Folklore runs 25 October - 17 November 2012 at Copenhagen Ceramics' new gallery space at Smallegade 46, Frederiksberg, Copenhagen.
