| Thinking Hands at Spoga + Gafa 2013 |
This year at Cologne's Spoga+Gafa trade fair we saw a growing number of companies and designers addressing the needs of the urban garden and gardener, as well as new ‘glowing’ ideas for furniture to light up to create mood and atmosphere.
Urban Gardens: products are designed especially for small spaces, balconies or backyards without green spaces, such as multi-purpose vertical structures that act as storage units for tools, as well as providing shelving for growing herbs.
Thinking Hands collective launched a product, Hochbeet, that enables the successful cultivation of home grown vegetables, even in areas of open wasteland by creating a raised self-contained planting system.
Asa Agerstam’s Micro Greenhouse takes a playful twist on this concept with a dose of guerrilla gardening activism by posting miniature pyramid gardens to friends to spread the micro gardening idea.

Glowing: Heidi Spiecker’s Light Bench Object is made from opal white, translucent, 6mm thick, age and weather-resistant acryl glass, which glows in a range of colours and is designed for public spaces such as hotels or bars. Also launching at Spoga+Gafa is a luxurious heated bench that gives added comfort to sitting outside.
