The brief for 2012's Electrolux Design Lab competition was to design appliance concepts that can provide a fuller sensory experience. Thomas Johansson, design director of Electrolux and president of the Jury explains, "We rely on our senses for virtually everything so it is important to take them into consideration when designing household appliances."

Aeroball by Jan Ankiersztajn

Announced on 25th October, this year's winning project is Polish designer Jan Ankiersztajn's Aeroball, a collection of small luminescent hovering balls that can filter and fragrance the air. The balls float using Helium and drift down to the ground when they need changing. As well as being poetic and aesthetic, the project ties into growing consumer concern over the quality of air we breathe.

Impress by Ben de la Roche

The second prize was awarded to Ben de la Roche, from New Zealand. His project, Impress, is a refrigerated wall that allows the user to insert bottles and containers directly into it. The jury commented that it provided "a visual experience that could [both] save energy and simplify the user's life."
The third prize went to Danish designer Christopher Holm-Hanson for his Tastee project, a taste indicator in the shape of a spoon. It uses sensors based on human taste to say which ingredients may be missing in a dish that is being prepared. It was considered "a tool that [could] guide one's palate and bring out the chef in oneself."
