The latest editions of Craft + Design and Paralela Gift contain almost no plain objects. From couches to bags, there is hardly anything on show at either Brazilian homewares fair that doesn't make use of pattern.
Most of the patterns shown in the fairs are bright and colourful - but even sober and elegant furniture like Leonardo Bueno’s wooden benches come with a subtle striped pattern entirely made of wood chips.
Exhibitors are also keen to explain who designed each pattern and how many colour and combination options the customer has to choose from. This print obssession is due to the increasing interest in graphic design in Brazil in the past few years. In major cities there are now graphics schools everywhere - and it seems to be already influencing design production.
