Modern favourites continue to be melamine and acrylic, which are lightweight and hardwearing. Bamboo - a relatively new favourite material in the outdoor scene - is preferred by the eco-conscious; while retro-style pieces made of enamel are ideal for more robust outings, such as camping.

Conservative transparent styles are well-liked for sophisticated outdoor dining, while coloured transparents and opaques in lively colourways are favoured for contemporary casual dining. On the other hand, cost and short-term convenience make disposable cutlery attractive to consumers.
