Wake and Wonder by Adrian Esparza

Monday 16 December 2013

Currently on show at the Pérez Art Museum in Miami, Wake and Wonder by Texas-based artist Adrian Esparza is made from a traditional serape blanket from Mexico, which has been pulled apart at its threads and woven back around nails hammered into the wall.

Multiple dimensions are created using the threads and layers of contrasting colour. Esparza thinks of the installation as a self-portrait, representing his cultural identity and tradition that has been displaced from its site of origin.

The artwork is part of the exhibition Americana: Formalizing Craft which runs from now until May 2015.
