Founded in Chicago in 1950, the Good Design program sought to promote modern design to a then traditional public. In 2009, The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Center for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies instituted a separate edition of the annual awards that specifically recognizes global green talent in the fields of product design and architecture.

Judging criteria for 2011 centered on minimized waste, energy reduction and conservation, the reuse of materials, recyclability and retrofit. Award recipients included designers, architects, manufacturers, developers, corporations, governments, foundations, communities, and individuals from 27 nations who displayed attentiveness to protecting the environment.

Over 120 new buildings and products were recognized this year. Products included everything from new appliances, to sporting equipment, to cleaning products whereas buildings ranged from schools, to bus shelters, to resorts.

Some notable recipients in the area of product design included: Sir Norman Foster, Philippe Starck, Russ Lovegove, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, Fernando + Huberto Campana, Metaphase Design Group, New Deal Design LLP, Karim Rashid, Matteo Thun, Phoenix Design GmbH, Pentagram Design, Continuum, Makio Hasuike, Alfredo Haberli

Noteworthy recipients in the field of architecture and urban planning included: Latz + Patner, Van Der Merwe Miszewski Architects, EAA-Emre Arolat Architects, Behnisch Architekten, Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, P&T Consultants Pte.
