The Waterhouse at South Bund, a former Japanese army headquarters turned into a hotel by Shanghai-based designers Neri and Hu Design and Research Office (
NHDRO), is one of the three first prize winners of this year's Emerging Architecture Awards, organised by
Architectural Review.

The other first prize winners are Shima Kitchen, a new restaurant and arts venue on a Japanese island by
Atelier Ryo Abe, and Studio East Dining, a temporary rooftop restaurant in Stratford by
Carmody Groarke that had disappeared before the results of the competition were even announced.

The awards have a strict entry criteria: entries must be built work created by designers under the age of 45. Catherine Slessor, editor of AR, said of this year's judging process, "the skill, sensitivity and inventiveness of submissions has remained at a stubbornly high level, and this year is no exception. We could have made ten issues of great projects, but had to draw the line somewhere."
