Berlin Weekly, the shop that never opens

Wednesday, 18 August 2010

Artists and designers are given one week each to fill this Berlin shop window with a display of their choosing. The items on show are not available from the shop itself, which doesn’t open; instead, admirers can go online to purchase selected pieces from each display and learn more about the ideas behind them.

The project began in June this year and is now up to Week 9, which sees Australian artist Rebecca Delange install an ever-changing collection of sculptures entitled ‘The Forest #1’.

A wide variety of approaches and objects have been on display so far: week 1 featured colourful pendant lights by Formfjord and a wax-jointed chair by Jerszy Seymour, while Studio Vraay placed an assortment of electric heaters in the space in week 3.

Berlin’s regular ‘What’s New’ e-bulletin describes the venture as “a new way to create desire”. Each week's display is chronicled on the Berlin Weekly website, which also features a weekly quote and photo intended to provide further inspiration. The shop itself is located at Linienstrasse 160/Berlin Mitte.
