Six-Forty by Four-Eighty

Six-Forty by Four-Eighty

Jamie Zigelbaum and Marcelo Coelho have taken the modular design trend to the next level with Six-Forty by Four-Eighty, a lighting installation showcased at Design Miami/Basel. The designers were one of four winners of the Designers of the Future Award who were commissioned by W Hotels Worldwide to create pieces that coincide with this month's fair.

The interactive lighting installation was made of 220 three-inch tiles installed on the walls of a pitch-black booth. The pixel-like tiles are magnetic light boxes in pink, yellow, green, red or blue. Visitors were able to move them around, creating both interactive art and modular design.

From the designers: "Light, like computation, is something we rarely touch. At a personal scale, the pixel-tiles are objects designed to interact with our bodies—we can manipulate them individually, touching them to change their location and color. At an architectural scale, we can manipulate them in unison, creating dynamic light patterns across multiple pixels at once by simply pointing at them."
