The new architecture of rattan at Salone del Mobile 2013

Italian-born and Barcelona-based architect Benedetta Tagliabue is working on a collection of contemporary rattan seats for Spanish furniture manufacturer Expormim. The first product, the Tina armchair, will be showcased at the Milan Furniture Fair.

French designer Mathieu Lehanneur has completed the interior design of a new Parisian cultural platform, Electric. In a space of 1,000 m2, complete with panoramic views over Paris and the Eiffel Tower, the designer created a technological forest that graces music events and concerts with a note of poetry.

Wintec wins the 2013 Design Indaba Innovation Award

South African manufacturers Wintec Innovation have received the Design Indaba Innovation Award for their Stratflex™furniture, presented at this year's exhibition. 

A new patented technology, Stratflex™enables rigid flat boards to be flexed in two or three dimensions, to create furniture for the flat-pack market. Made from plywood and timber, the Stratflex™range is easy to assemble, affordable, and uses locally sourced and sustainable materials.

Running from 1st to 3rd March, Design Indaba Expo showcases the best in South African design and high-end craft across jewellery, furniture and homewares.

Winners of the Most Creative Stand, Marc Nicholson and Lyall Sprong from Thingking epitomise the playful, mixed medium crossover of low tech-high tech evident at the show.

Illustrations feature in textiles, on ceramics and furniture, and strong graphic elements are evident.

Lumio: lighting that unfolds

Currently raising funds on Kickstarter is an ingenious new lamp that unfolds like a book to provide different degrees of lighting.

Called Lumio, the cordless light can function for 8 hours on a full charge. Strong magnets in its cover allow it to affix to metallic surfaces, and it folds down into a book-shaped object for easy transportation.

Miss Ko: An entrancing spectacle by Philippe Starck

In the heart of the tranquil and conservative 8th arrondissement of Paris, on the famously chic Avenue George V, French restaurateur and designer Claude Louzon and Philippe Starck have opened a rebellious and fantastical new canteen. In Philippe Starck's own words, "Miss Ko is a kind of madness that should be a lot of fun, especially in an area that really isn't."

Silver Cross for Aston Martin: limited edition pram

Aston Martin has teamed up with baby travel brand Silver Cross to create a limited edition luxury pram. Features of the Silver Cross Surf baby travel system include spoked wheels, an Alcantara-lined seat and a leather trimmed handle and bumper bar.

Only 800 will be manufactured worldwide, priced at £2000 each. The product will be exclusively available at Harrods in April 2013, supplied with its own certificate and plaque of authenticity.

Urban Outfitters furniture range

Urban Outfitters Europe has launched a new range of furniture pieces to complement its current Home offering. The retailer has made a number of mid century-inspired pieces available on its website, including a charcoal button-back sofa bed, a stack of mix-and-match drawers, a black wireframe bookcase and a brightly painted dresser.
