HBL analysis: Origin 2011

Clare Knox-Bentham

Craft selling show Origin marked its second year as part of the London Design Festival, and its second edition based in Spitalfields Market in East London, with a successful show that was particularly strong for ceramics. WGSN-homebuildlife presents the exhibitor highlights.

Bone china vessel by Tanya la Mantia

Designer Clare Knox-Bentham creates bespoke wall pieces using extruded plastic. The molten plastic is drawn on sheets of glass using an industrial extrusion gun, then peeled away from its backing, resulting in a standalone curtain or three-dimensional drawing.

Ceramicist Tanya la Mantia explores the translucent properties of her specialist material, bone china, by forming the clay into thin-walled vessels and impressing nature-inspired motifs on to the interior, which then come through to the other side as subtle patterning.

Lidded Jars by Sun Kim

Korean potter Sun Kim's Lidded Jars were unlike any other exhibit at the show, with plump, pillowy forms that appeared soft but were solid to the touch. Made of stoneware, each jar is formed by hand on a wheel and finished with a low-shine glaze.
